They both left a comfortable career, throwing themselves into the unknown, on a mission to solve an issue they had identified. At Open Eyes Mornings' first talk, we had the pleasure to host Shivangi Bagri, co-founder of TruCup and Toni Chan, founder of August Society.

A random idea turned into a business adventure

Shivangi was longing for something that could sustain her active lifestyle involving yoga and diving while being on the period. She hadn’t found anything working until she tried a menstrual cup. It was a revolution for her and she decided others should get to know this too.

Toni was travelling a lot and looking for swimwear that could be used beyond just swimwear. Also, she couldn't find anything she liked from the current collections and decided to do something about it.

A business with purpose

Both went on a mission to set up their companies. They switched from a stable career to an unknown professional and personal path. It involved hard work and challenges on the way. Nevertheless, what is significant is their resilience, ambition and drive. Not to let go of their idea, their mission.

As they set up their business, they early included the social impact aspect. To contribute to society beyond their business was relevant. Rightly so, as 88% of consumers want to see brands being socially and ethically conscious. But how much impact do Shivangi and Toni do because they care - or because of what the consumers want to see? Throughout the talk, it is obvious that everything is genuinely from their own interest. It shines through during the conversation - they are both conscious, well prepared, professional and down-to-earth. No-fuss, clichés or because of pressure from outside. They do what they feel is right.

Solving real issues

Shivangi saw a problem where many girls in India struggle during their menstruation due to taboos and lack of knowledge. By initiating the programme TRU (The Red Understanding), TruCup supports women in urban slums and rural villages. The programme helps educate and contribute to breaking down the stigma around menstruation.

Toni was horrified about the tons of plastic that go into the ocean. Also, the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, the fourth largest industrial disaster in history, played a major role when defining the business. The swimwear is created from sustainable sources in a factory in Bali where good working conditions are key.

Essentials for building a successful brand

What are the top qualities and mantras you may need when looking to turning your idea into a business? When asking Shivangi and Toni here's what they said:

1. Be a bit crazy, fearless.

2. Keep carry on, never stop.

3. Don't overthink, just do.

We can be sure to see more of these two power ladies. The journey has just begun!
